Why Shouldn’t You Work from Home

Ever since the pandemic surfaced, many organizations had no option but to allow employees to work from home. This step was taken to protect the workers from the viral disease. Although this pandemic has been pretty much over, some employees are still working from home. After all, there is a ton of benefits associated with it. For instance, employees can work on their own schedules. Plus, they will be able to save cost on fuel.

Work from home is great, but it is not for all! Many people struggle while they are working remotely. For example, when it comes to working from home, some people may be worried about installing an internet connection. And they might spend most of their time thinking about how much is Spectrum deals costing them. Here are some of the disadvantages of working from home:

#1. Lack of Teamwork and Community

According to Aristotle, men are social animals by nature. Therefore, it’s understandable that they can’t live alone. Also, it’s not surprising if they find it difficult to work alone efficiently. While the idea of WFH may excite some employees as they think they can perform much better without the distractions of the workplace, some may find it really hard. After all, spending long working hours in front of a computer screen without any social interaction can be a bit challenging. Luckily, there are different platforms like Skype and Zoom that employees can use to connect with their coworkers to brainstorm ideas.

#2. No Motivation

Motivation is what drives employees to achieve their goals. It gives them the strength to power on. But workers can quickly lose motivation when they are put in the wrong time and place. And when there is no motivation, it can prevent the talents from being productive at work. Working in the office with coworkers who share a common purpose, or a goal can give employees some external motivation. However, working from home doesn’t have that kind of environment.

#3. Unmonitored Performance

Self-regulation is not an easy task. Therefore, working remotely and alone can be challenging. This is because when workers are placed in such a situation, they will be required to monitor their performance at work themselves. Workers may not be able to do a perfect job at this. As a result of that, they may simply laze around or take one too many breaks. This will obviously have an effect on their productivity, and they won’t be able to perform their job to their fullest potential. When one is working in the office, they are constantly reminded to keep their focus and be on the right track which helps them remain productive at work.

#4. Distractions

There’s no doubt that working from home has its benefits. For instance, employees can better take care of their families. They can get to spend more time with their kids. However, there is more to the picture. When workers are performing their job, they can easily get distracted. For example, they may start to watch television, or they may be required to look after their children. When they are distracted, no matter how good an employee is, the individual will not be able to concentrate on work. Therefore, the workers will be unable to deliver the desired results.

#5. Burnout

One of the biggest benefits of WFH is flexibility. Employees can work on their own schedules. However, this can become a problem for some workers. Some employees may not create their schedules too well and forget to clock out which will make it difficult for them to differentiate between home life and work. This means that an employee may end up working for longer hours than required which will result in stress and burnout. Working in the office will save employees from getting burnout as it will help them define the line between private and professional life.

#6. Lack of Productivity

It is commonly believed that working from home increases productivity. However, this may not be entirely true. How? Well, the distractions! Employees can easily lose focus due to different distractions. For instance, they might decide to take a nap or watch web series. They may not be able to concentrate on work as a result of which they will lose interest in the job they do. Plus, working from home can make one feel isolated. And when that happens, workers might lose motivation as well which will further create problems for them when it comes to performing their job right.

Conclusion

Working from home is a blessing. But some employees find it difficult to work remotely. They are more comfortable doing their job on-site. Plus, WFH can lose some or all of the aforementioned issues for some workers. Therefore, it is important for organizations to support a hybrid working environment so that those who can work remotely can do so while those who can’t, can come to the office.
